You don't need hours of homework or expensive programs. A short, regular routine, the same time most days, builds skills and good habits. Here's a 15-minute plan that fits around school and play.
The 15-minute routine
- 5 minutes of maths: one skill at a time, like a times table, a short worksheet or the daily challenge.
- 5 minutes of words: spelling, sight words or handwriting.
- 5+ minutes of reading: together or alone. Many schools suggest 15โ20 minutes of reading a day, so read longer if your child is enjoying it.
A sample week
| Day | Skill (5โ10 min) | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Times tables (say + mixed test) | Read 15 min |
| Tuesday | Handwriting: this week's words | Read 15 min |
| Wednesday | Telling time or the clock game | Read 15 min |
| Thursday | Math worksheet: one skill | Read 15 min |
| Friday | Daily challenge + spelling test | Read for fun |
| Weekend | Word search or a board game | Library visit |
Tips that make it stick
- Same time, same place: after a snack works well for many families.
- Use a routine chart so your child can see what's next and tick it off.
- Stop while it's still fun. Ending on a win makes tomorrow easier.
- Celebrate effort: stars, stickers or simply telling someone what they learned.
- Follow what school is teaching this term: ask the teacher which skills to practise.
